We've all more than likely heard the expression, Gen Y, or Millennial.  The terms are used pretty much interchangeably, to define a particular generation known as Generation Y (Gen Y) or Millennials. Throughout time, there have been many generations characterized by names like "Baby Boomers", "Gen X" etc.  The real interesting thing, is that for the very first time in history, we have as many as five generations in the workplace, all working side by side. If you think about it, managing these generations can be a daunting task, if you are not aware of the traits and habits of each group. Understanding simple differences between how a Baby Boomer and a Millennial views the world, can certainly be helpful when trying to figure out how to motivate them. As an example, a Baby Boomer sales rep might be motivated quite nicely by a technology gadget for accomplishing a goal, or winning a contest, while a Millennial might be more motivated by time off work, to hang out with friends.

Keep in mind, there has been a lot of ongoing research on generational differences, and defining generations, and the below list is not exact.  If you research this yourself, you'll see that it is not an exact science in terms of the defining of the generation, it is a guideline at best. While you can't say that everyone within a group will be the same, on the whole, those within a generation often exhibit very similar characteristics.

Those born between:

1883 -1900  -  The Lost Generation

1901 - 1924  - The Greatest Generation

1925 - early 1942  -  The Silent Generation

1943 - early 1960's  -  Baby Boomers

early 1960's - early 1980's  -  Generation X

early 1980's - early 2000's  -  Generation Y   (Gen Y  Millennials)

early 2000's - present  -  iGen  (not fully defined yet)

You can find other definitions that are more precise, but in general, this is a good outline. Remember, these dates are meant to help define a generation, but it in no way means to place people in a box. It only helps us understand the characteristics that define, in general, the beliefs and behaviors of a generation.
There are plenty of websites where you can learn and read more about marketing to GenY, and understanding the generations in the workplace. It is a fascinating subject.

On Jason's website….you will see him define GenY as:

  • Has a feeling of entitlement
  • They are tech dependent, but not tech savvy.
They don't know how technology works, just that they need it.
  • Enjoys instant gratification….hates standing in line…..even for coffee!
  • Has big expectations….just not sure if they want to, or agree with what it takes to get there.

I would recommend more reading.  It is VERY INTERESTING.
